Why I learned on the Duotone Gambler
Tye's first kiteboard pick is an unconventional choice at best. His situation is different because he comes from a snowboarding background and has a specific goal in mind. We wanted to illustrate that modern wakestyle kitesurfing gear can be used to learn on as well.
The Gambler is a high rocker board with a grind base. It has the largest range of size from Duotone's board lineup. This has a lot to do with what Duotone's team riders who use the Gambler prefer. The funny thing is the larger sizes work well for new riders too. A 148 Gambler sounds like a huge board to most kiteboarders, but for the Gambler it is the perfect fit for most riders.
You can expect soft landings due to the rocker line and a good pop from the stiffness. The larger sizes track upwind well due to the extra surface area and the board has good channeling to help. If you use the smaller sizes you will have a difficult time getting upwind or getting good speed unless you are a small rider.
The best thing about this kiteboard is the grind base. A board like this is made to take some hits and will outlast other boards because of that. The base is made to grind things, so you can be rough on this board and not worry about it. If you're a rider who likes to toss their gear around, this would be a good fit. Lastly, if you are a rider who wants to do wake or parkstyle, this is your only choice from Duotone's lineup. It's an excellent crossover kiteboard.
