What Are the Differences Between Hard Shell and Soft Shell Harnesses?
Picking a harness might be one of the most important decisions of kiteboarding that many people often overlook. It’s not a cut-and-dry decision, especially with so many different brands, fits, and features.
Looking at all the harnesses on the market, you’ll see two major separating factors—soft shell or hard shell. Adding to the options we now have on the market, we have hook and slider spreader bar options as well seat and shorts harness.
For this blog, we’re going to focus on soft and hard shell options.
We’re not all shaped the same. That being said, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to picking a harness. Depending on your body shape and needs you will have one harness that works better for you than another. At the end of the day, harness selection comes down to your personal needs, like what kind of fit, support, and comfort you are looking for.
Here are my thoughts when considering which rigidity to choose for your harness.
Soft Shell Kiteboarding Harnesses
Soft harnesses are quite comfortable and easier to travel with, but they are not ideal for people who need extra back support. The softness in the harness increases comfort, though it decreases support. This allows for a greater range of motion but comes with the cost of back support.
Hard Shell Kiteboarding Harnesses
Hard shell harnesses offer the most support of any waist harness and are ideal for individuals that are in need of extra back support, but still want the mobility of a waist harness. Some people find that hard shell harnesses are not as comfortable for them as soft or medium harnesses. This is typically due to a sizing issue of pressure points.
Getting the size correct with a hard shell is crucial for having a comfortable hard shell. The major drawback for hard shell harnesses is that typically they are the most expensive harnesses in a company's line up. We usually recommend that people try these on somewhere before purchasing.
Hybrid Kiteboarding Harnesses
Hybrid harnesses are a blend between soft and hard shell harnesses. Normally they have some frame that gives added support but also allows for extra mobility to the wearer.
When choosing a harness it is important to make sure you find a harness that fits your body correctly. Having a harness that is too small or big will not only annoy you, but in the long run, make your kiteboarding sessions shorter and much less enjoyable.
Harnesses are the only piece of equipment that you are in constant contact with while in the water. Making sure you have a properly fitting harness is just as important as finding the proper fit with ski boots, snowboard boots, or running shoes. Finding the right harness for yourself is one of the best things you can do to improve your kiteboarding experience.
