Wake Foiling | How to Transfer From Wake to Wake

Wake Foiling | How to Transfer From Wake to Wake

Most of you got into wake foiling because you can drop back a wake. This really separates wake foiling from wake surfing, and here I'm going to break down exactly how you can learn how to drop back a wake on your wake foil.

Prerequisites

Make sure that you have some familiarity with pumping. You don't have to be an expert, but you want to at least be able to pump a little bit before you try this trick. You also need to be able to surf the wake without the rope pretty comfortably.

Steps to Drop Back a Wake

1. Set yourself up about mid-mast on top of the wake you're going to start from. Then you're going to carve out just behind the wake in front of you as you glide out into the flat water. It's important that you keep your speed up before you get to the flat water. This is going to make your life easier when it comes to pumping.

2. Make sure that you avoid the wake in front of you. If you hit the wake in front of you, you're going to slow down and fall. Carve out, miss the wake in front of you, and now you're pumping in the flat water.

3. Pump away from the wake that you are riding. You want the boat to get away from you so it brings the wake that's behind you next to you. That's why we pump out so far away from the boat.

4. Now that you're away from the boat, turn around. Do a toeside turn back towards the wake and spot the wake that you want to ride.

5. Ride straight towards the new wake. This is another important part of this maneuver. When you get just a couple pumps away from that wake that you're trying to get onto, make sure that you angle yourself so you're not hitting that wake straight on. If you hit the wake straight on, you're probably going to fall because you can't do a turn sharp enough to ride that wake, so just before you get to that wake, start turning so you can set yourself up to start riding it.

Dropping back a wake on a wake foil is way more attainable than people think. As long as you can pump and as long as you can ride the wake without the rope, then you're in good shape to try this trick.
