Wake Foiling | How to Get Up
The day has come: it's time for you to learn how to wake foil! Put on that life vest, strap on that helmet, and get out there and start to ride. It might seem daunting to learn how to wake foil, but check out these tips to make it a little bit easier to get up and ride.
1. Get Ready
You're in the water with your board and the tow handle in your hand. To get the board to your feet, grab the rail of the board with your off-hand while keeping the other hand on the handle. Tell the driver to go slowly forward so the board will be pushed to your feet by the water.
Once the board is stuck to your feet, move your stance to the proper position. Stick one foot over where the mast of the foil connects to the board, with the other foot in front of that one about a shoulder-width apart. It's important that you have that back foot directly over the mast.
2. Get Up
Crush your knees to your chest while keeping your arms straight. Tell the driver to "hit it" and let the boat pull you out of the water. Be sure you don't try to fight the boat or try to force yourself out of the water. Let the boat pull you up as you keep your shoulders back and get on top of the water.
This part of wake foiling is almost identical to wake surfing, but there is one difference. Make sure that you put all of your weight on the front foot. Yep- all of your weight needs to go on the front foot of the board.
This is a lot different from wing surfing or wakeboarding where you'll put all of your weight on your back foot when you're getting out of the water. Here, the board has extra lift from the hydrofoil, so by pushing down with your front foot, you'll keep the board in a stable position. If you don't apply enough front foot pressure, your board's going to shoot out of the water and you're going to fall. However, if you feel like your board is submarining and you can't get it out of the water, then you can add a little bit of back foot pressure, but more often than not you'll want to use that front foot.
3. Get a Feel for It
Once you're on top of the water, keep the board on the water for a bit rather than trying to get up on the foil right away. Carve around and get a feel for what the foil rides like. Even with your board on the water, you'll gain an understanding for how the foil flies under water. This will make flying the foil a lot easier once the board is out of the water.
4. Get Flying
Once you lift out of the water, you are officially wake foiling. Learning how to get up on a foil can be that simple. Yes, you're going to have falls, but you'll learn with each one and become able to stay on foil longer each time.
Now that you know how to get up, get out there and try it. Happy shredding, and I look forward to seeing you on the water!
