How to Jump Higher With the J-Hook and Lazy-S Kiteboarding Techniques

How to Jump Higher With the J-Hook and Lazy-S Kiteboarding Techniques

Make Your Kiteboarding Jumps Even Higher With the J-Hook TechniqueI've been coaching some friends on how to boost higher while kiteboarding. Most people use a J-Hook (carving upwind to load the rail) to pop. I find that the Lazy-S (carving upwind, but instead of popping, you carve downwind using the increased power to accelerate) makes much more power. But first, let's talk about using the J-Hook to transition to the Lazy-S.The first thing I say is that you are not being pulled by a kite—you ar …

Now it's time for round two, so we're going to talk about a stalefish grab. It's pretty similar, but there are some slight differences with what you're doing with your body. How to Backroll Kiteloop Late Tail Grab: With Shaun Bennett

How to Backroll Kiteloop Late Tail Grab: With Shaun Bennett

Yo, what's up guys? I'm Rygo. And I'm Shaun. And we were running through some footage that Brad Strom filmed at Hood River and Lyle. We've been doing some trick tips and Shaun here had some pretty rad big air tricks, and we thought we'd cover one of them that we really liked, the backroll kiteloop late tail grab. Can you break this down? I just make sure that once I commit to the backroll kiteloop by keeping the bar pinned in all the way after the load and …

Setting Your Bar & Fins for Big Air and Freestyle W/ Ewan Jaspan

Setting Your Bar & Fins for Big Air and Freestyle W/ Ewan Jaspan

These past 9 months, Kristen and I have had the opportunity to travel to kite spots while living out of an RV. In the spring we linked up with some old friends, and made some new ones along the way. We went hard filming and making fresh content. Best of all, we were able to learn and share more insights from the top riders in the sport. Few have the experience in so many disciplines from big air, freestyle & park to surf and foil as Ewan Jaspan of Naish kiteboarding. We sat down for an extensi …

Kite Girl's First Crail Grab

Kite Girl's First Crail Grab

The Crail Grab is the least common grab seen on the beach, mostly because it's not one you would think to do often. Taking your back hand and reaching for the nose takes some flexibility and core, but it looks epic paired with rolls and rotations. For this video I'll cover the most simple variation. If you want to see the more advanced version, check out this video by Rygo and Blake. They accidentally called it a Nuke Grab, but this video breaks down more variations of this grab. Step O …

How to Master the Kiteboarding Front Roll Tail Grab

How to Master the Kiteboarding Front Roll Tail Grab

The Front Roll is usually the second trick everyone wants to learn right after the Back Roll. It's a simple trick that always looks good, especially if you add a grab to it. The easiest grab to start with is the tail grab. This is one of my go-to tricks every session because it just feels so good. For this video, I'll break down the freestyle pop technique. This can be done hooked in, and you can actually do this with a sent jump. This technique will help give more power to your pop and help …

Kiteboarding Tricks: Half Loaded Tail Grab With Chris Bobryk

Kiteboarding Tricks: Half Loaded Tail Grab With Chris Bobryk

We're kicking off a fresh series of trick tips with Chris Bobryk and myself. We'll be covering the lost art of kite low line tension tricks. In an era of sent jumps and big air, it seems many have forgotten all the other aspects of the sport that make it unique. Kite low line tension tricks are the friendlier version of unhooked freestyle. We actually covered a lot of line tension tricks in our Ride with Blake series, but we never put the emphasis on keeping the kite low and not sending the ki …

Kite Girl's First Front Roll Tail Grab

Kite Girl's First Front Roll Tail Grab

The Non-inverted Sent Hooked-in Front Roll Tail Grab is a super easy beginner trick. Keep your hands close to the middle of the bar and get some speed with the bar sheeted slightly out. Come in with good speed and send the kite up to noon. At the same time, sheet the bar in and pop off your back leg. As you leave the water, look over your back shoulder and swing your hips. Bring your back knee into your chest at the same time. Since this in a non-inverted roll, your body will automatically …

Two Tips for Big Air Kitesurfing Jumps

Two Tips for Big Air Kitesurfing Jumps

This video is for riders who can jump bit would like to go higher. It was fun speaking with Shaun because in a way we both kiteboard but we’re practicing completely different sports. Big air riders do things very differently and they have one goal. Go high and loop the kite! You need to be proficient with the basics and a solid free rider before going for maximum height. That said, Shaun had some great tips to help you take your jumps to new heights. Load those lines up with the bar all …

Low Backroll Kiteloop Nose Grab - Easy Freeride Kitesurf Tricks

Low Backroll Kiteloop Nose Grab - Easy Freeride Kitesurf Tricks

Whats up guys, this week, I’m going to cover a fun and easier kiteloop based trick. With hooked in kiteboarding there’s three things that take a trick to the next level, a loop, a rotation and a grab. Moving past down all the download variations, the Bankroll Nose grab kite loop is probably the easiest powered loop trick. Its a little intense but one you can start underpowered and work your way up! Let’s get to it. Get simple Backroll kiteloops dialed first Before attempting …

Raley to Blind

Raley to Blind

The Raley to Blind is a critical step in your unhooked freestyle journey. It's typically the first fundamental move to be paired with a rotation. In our “Unhooked Fundamentals” playlist, I hammered home the point that all advanced moves are combinations of the fundamentals. This lower intermediate move is the first progression towards the Blind Judge, the Blind Judge 3, 5 and beyond. Once you get comfortable landing this to blind, you can pair the rotation with the Backroll and the …

Darkslide by Feel

Darkslide by Feel

This week we're going to cover a popular trick that everyone wants to learn: the Darkslide! We've done a few videos on this, but I wanted to do a concise and to-the-point tutorial focused on doing the trick via bar feedback. You'll want to try this one with a little bit of power, but not overpowered. You can be a little underpowered, but you will have to go fast. Come in with decent speed and start to send the kite up like you would for a small jump. Pay attention to your bar. Right when y …
