Beginner Kiteboarding Lesson: Launch Your Kite
Learn how to launch your kite in shallow water, with lots of free space around you.
The correct launching procedure is your first step to safe kiteboarding. Before launching, check that your bar lines and kite or all in order. Then check that you have enough space above and around you. Once your helper is holding the kite in the correct position, at the edge of the window, you can walk up wind to increase the pressure in the lines. With tension on the lines, and with the kite effortlessly resting in the helper's hands, you are ready for takeoff.
Have one final check of your bar, lines, kite, and the airspace above and around you. If you encounter any problems, raised your hand flat with the palm of your hand facing the helper, to signal that they should wait.
As soon as you're ready, hold your thumb up to signal to the helper he can let go of the kite. The kite should be released with no additional pushing or throwing.
Steer the kite slowly to twelve o'clock by pulling gently on the upper hand only. Do not pull with your lower hand. Always be prepared to let go of the bar or use the quick release if needed.
Let's repeat the key elements:
- Check your gear and airspace above and around you.
- Walk up wind until your kite starts floating.
- Signal to your helper that they should let go.
- Steer the kite with the upper hand only.
Signal to release the kite.
