Save Time and Reduce Drag | Why Konrad Click Nuts Are a Must-Have for Foilers
Ryan from MACkite has a nifty, convenient upgrade for foilers. He's been using the Konrad Click nuts with his foils for a while now and absolutely loves them. He's also got some tips to share that will make them as secure, useful, and unobtrusive as possible while out on the water.
What are Konrad Click Nuts?
Konrad Click nuts replace the screws that attach your foil to your board. (You'll still use your own track nuts, though, so hang on to those!) They have a nice, big wing for tool-less installation, so they'll save you time when you get to the beach.
As an added bonus, you don't even have to come in if you need to adjust your foil. Simply loosen the screws a bit and slide your foil to a new position, then tighten them back down.
It's also a handy system if you like to swap boards and foils during a session. It only takes a few seconds to remove your foil, then a few more to swap it out.
It seems like anything that adds convenience comes with a trade-off, though, and the Konrad Click nuts do add some drag when you're getting up to speed to lift off or when you touch a wave. Granted, they'll be out of the water most of the time you're riding, but there's actually a way to minimize drag while in the water.
Konrad Click Nut Tips
These screws have a hidden feature. You can pull up on the wing and rotate it to any position you like without affecting how tight they are. Once you've got them installed, just rotate each wing so that it's running parallel to the board. Now the drag in the water will be minimal.
When you're installing the screws, be sure they're straight up and down. You don't want them crooked since this will allow them to loosen up while riding.
As you tighten them, get each screw snug but not tight, then move around to the next one. Then go around once more, making sure each is nice and tight, but of course not so tight that you strip the threads.
If you want to adjust your foil position out in the water, flip your board over so the foil is up out of the water. Loosen the screws just enough to slide your foil, then re-tighten them using the tips above. Don't forget to re-align the wings with the board if necessary.
Is It Right for Me?
Of course, flush mount screws are going to have the least drag, but when the Konrad Click nut wings are aligned correctly, most people aren't going to notice the difference. You'll need to decide if the convenience of a tool-less setup and the time it saves getting into the water make this system worth it for you. If you swap boards or foils during a session or sometimes need to adjust your foil position, it may also be right for you.
