Ryan & Hunter's Code Integrated Foil Drive Mast Review

Ryan and Hunter have been using these for a little while now, and after Code took some time to dial them in just right, the team has been really stoked with the result; check out the breakdown, who's it for, and its features.

Base Plate Features

Starting at the base plate, there's a slotted hardware channel for mounting to the board. The slot makes it easy and seamless to drop the split bolts in — great for quickly swapping the unit out, instead of fiddling around trying to line up a single hole. There are also two holes to mount the base unit directly, so you can carry the mast and base unit as one piece. That's been pretty standard for integrated masts, but it's nice to see Code include it here.

Mast Heights and Pod Positions

There are two masts on hand, both 78 cm tall. One has the mini pod mounted at 11 cm, and the other at 17 cm — giving riders a choice between sitting the pod higher up or closer to the board.

  • 11cm Position: One centimeter lower than the lowest cord Foil Drive actually sells, which is a 12cm cord.
  • 17cm Position: Right in between Foil Drive's 15 and 20cm options.

For a one-size-does-it-all setup, most people are going to be happy with the 17cm. It's a good blend: high enough to keep the pod completely out of the water once you're up on a swell, but still low enough to comfortably eFoil into waves.

Hunter has been riding the 11cm mount, which requires staying a little closer to the surface and can occasionally air out the motor, but it's nice having the pod further out of the water once you're up and riding.

Mini Pod Efficiency

The mini pod is efficient when it touches down in the water. You don't feel it when it dips; you can pump, dip it, and continue pumping with no problem. Beyond that smooth feel, it's also just more efficient overall. It lets you ride smaller foil setups, ride them a little faster, and conserve battery. There are a lot of advantages to motoring with the integrated mast setup.

Included Mast Cover

In the box, the mast comes with a neat little cover. The base unit fits down inside it, and the motor can fit inside the cover too. There's also a small pocket with Velcro inside for screws and hardware.

Fusion and Max Compatibility

On top of the base plate, the plate can be loosened to adjust the cord. For Fusion users, you can pull some of the cord out and attach it directly to the Fusion unit without needing the barnacle. For Max users, you can leave everything as-is — the cord is set at a perfect length out of the box, no adjustment required.

Motor Options and Installation

The masts can be ordered either with or without the motor. That's a nice touch for existing Foil Drive owners: there's no need to buy a second motor just to get the mast. Buying without the motor lowers the price point and lets you bring your own.

Installation is easy. There's a through-bolt that pops out and a couple of screws that will be familiar to anyone who has mounted their motor on other masts with the universal pod. The whole process is simple, quick, and seamless — under 10 minutes. For travel, the motor zips out quickly, so riders can either travel with it attached in the bag or take advantage of the quick disconnect.

Performance and Stiffness

Overall, it's an awesome mast. It's extremely stiff, like all the other Code masts, no compromise there, and the profile is efficient as well. For Code riders already familiar with how high-performance the brand's foil gear is, this is no different. They did a great job making a really efficient, stiff mast.

Who Is It For?

After riding it across different locations and different waves, Ryan and Hunter are stoked to have this in the quiver. For existing Foil Drive owners, especially anyone already on Code, this one's a no-brainer. It really ups the level of enjoyment, battery life, and performance.
