Omen Capacitor Review: A Dedicated Foil Drive Trench Board
Ryan and Hunter have been riding the Omen Capacitor for a while now, putting it through the ringer in a lot of different conditions. This is a dedicated Foil Drive trench board that has been long-awaited, and the team is ready to share their first impressions.
Sizes and Construction
The Omen Capacitor comes in three sizes to suit various riders and needs. The size featured in this review is the 35-liter, which measures 4'11". It also comes in a 45-liter at 5'4" and a 56-liter at 5'8".
These are closed-cell carbon construction boards coming straight out of the Apple Tree factory. Because of that construction, the boards are very stiff and offer a great connection with the Foil Drive unit. Everything you put into the board and the foil, you're going to get back out of it.
Traction Pad Features
The board features a large diamond traction pad, which is the same pad found on the Zapples. A few key details make it stand out for Foil Drive use:
- Edge-to-Edge Coverage: The pad goes all the way to the edges of the board. This matters because Foil Drive boards are becoming smaller and narrower — the 35L is only 18.5" wide. You'll often find your back foot close to the edge, and having the pad extend to the rail ensures your toes aren't dangling off onto the hard surface of the board.
- Forward Extension: The pad extends fairly far toward the front of the board. That's beneficial for riders doing airs who need extra space, but it's also helpful for Foil Drive starts. When you're getting up, you often need more front-foot pressure, and the extended pad ensures you never have to step off the traction area to get that leverage.

The Foil Drive Trench
As a dedicated trench board, the Capacitor is designed specifically to house your Foil Drive unit. It's compatible with both the Foil Drive Max and the Fusion. When running the Fusion, it's typically positioned all the way to the front of the track. Because the Max has a shorter nose cone, it sits a bit further back from the front of the pocket in most scenarios.
One thing to note is that the track runs tight to the Foil Drive box, which means you'll have to take your unit off the board for battery swaps. While some might see that as a hurdle, it allows for a much more efficient board design. Especially with the Fusion sitting at the front of the trench, the snug fit helps water flow much better through the back portion of the board.

Efficiency and Rocker Profile
The Omen Capacitor is one of the more efficient boards on the market. Some boards with a completely flat outline or rocker line might be slightly more efficient for the initial pop-up, but they often suffer in other areas. The Capacitor features a significant amount of rocker in the nose and plenty of contour.
This design really shines during touchdowns. In choppy conditions or when riding upwind, the board is excellent at deflecting water and releasing quickly upon contact. It lets you continue riding efficiently without losing too much power or stalling out. The board also features some contour toward the back and mellow chines to further assist with water release.
Performance and Downsizing
The Omen Capacitor is incredibly stiff and responsive. One of the biggest takeaways from Ryan and Hunter is that you shouldn't be afraid to downsize with this model. The 35-liter version doesn't ride like a typical 35L — it feels larger in terms of how easy it is to get up on foil. Omen suggests dropping down about 10 liters from your usual board size, and the team agrees that's an easy transition to make.
The dimensions are well-thought-out for Foil Drive. Keeping the length around five feet or slightly under means the board maintains its efficiency. Once you drop down into the 4'0" or 4'6" range, you lose a lot of that glide and efficiency. Omen found the sweet spot by keeping some length in the board without making it feel like a "large" board once you're up and riding.

Who Is It For?
This board is for the rider looking for a high-performance, stiff, and responsive dedicated Foil Drive setup. It handles a wide range of conditions, from flat water to heavy chop, and excels at maintaining efficiency even during frequent touchdowns. If you want a board that translates every bit of input directly to the foil, the Capacitor is a top-tier choice.
