2022 Fanatic Sky Wing - Foil Board Review - Extensive Testing

Hey everybody, welcome back to Wing Wednesdays. I'm Tucker and today I'm going to talk with you about one of my favorite new boards, which is the Fanatic Sky Wing. So if you're into a new board for 2022, I'll tell you a little bit about it and my personal review, what I'm liking, what I'm riding, and we'll get to that right now.

So what we have here is the 2022 Fanatic Sky Wing. I've been testing this 5.0 size for quite a while now, about three months. I'm really loving it. In terms of a one-board-does-it-all, this has been one of my favorites for the 2022 season.

I'm 195 pounds; I can take a 75 liter out in relatively light wind. Maybe not the lightest of the light; then I need a little bit more volume than that, but it really expands the low end for a board at 70 to 75 liters for me. All those planing features help maximize the efficiency, and once you're up it just feels really small and fun.

It's an awesome board for jumping because it feels small, but then when you crash down on the water after doing a big jump or a 360 or whatever, there's enough volume in the board to help float you back to the surface and take off again. The problem I have a lot of times when it's not nuking wind--say it's blowing 20--and you do an air and then you come back down, a lot of times you're just going to sink so far you can't recover. You need to be really powered if you're going to ride a small board and do airs because otherwise, when you crash down like that, most people aren't going to land on foil, especially not every single time. Having a board that can support your weight for just a moment while you start to plane and take off again is really important.

So, really amped on this. The 5.0, 75 liter size has definitely been a magic size for me, but I'm also excited to try the bigger sizes for super light wind. And to try the smaller sizes, even, for nuking days and surf. But for me the 75 liter would be my pick for sure as a one-board-does-it-all. If you don't have a lot of experience, or maybe you're in an area with some light wind, you might bump up a little bit more as a one-board quiver, but I've been really stoked on it.

I mentioned the outline change and some of the planing features changes for 2022. I would also say that, even in the standard construction, this board is more robust than it was in 2021. I'm not sure exactly what they did, but it feels more solid. I've been riding it hard for three months, doing big air, slamming down on it, just giving it heck, and this board has taken every bit of it. I haven't had any issues, no repairs needed, and no heel dents or anything. So this thing is robust yet fairly lightweight. This one's about 14 and a half pounds, maybe 14 pounds, and that's respectable for a board of this size, especially a durable board in this size at this price point. It's not a $2200 custom carbon, so I think this is a realistic board for a lot of people, in their budget, which is really awesome.

So that's the Fanatic Sky Wing. Really stoked on it. I honestly don't have anything bad to say about it. Usually I can nitpick at something, but I don't think I can say anything bad about this. Maybe it could be a little lighter for some people; I don't get hung up on a couple of pounds as long as it's a durable board, so I don't have complaints there, but maybe if you're a lighter rider you feel the weight more if you're more picky in that way. They do have a team edition, TE, which is a full carbon construction. It's a bit more expensive, but it is going to be a couple pounds lighter weight, roughly, per size, so that's something you can look forward to in 2022 as well if you're willing to spend the cash.
