MAC's Take On The Package

If you are a featherweight ninja, or into riding in strong conditions, this is your day. The Small Gear package includes, you guessed it, Small gear for an incredibly small price. The Nova wing is stable and well behaved in heavy winds with hard handles for ergonomic, low stress control throughout the whole wild wind range. The Starboard Wingboard in 4'9 size makes it easier than expected to ride a micro board with impressive stability and pro level performance for when it's most critical. The optional North Prime 1200 foil is an excellent starting point for light weight rippers or more experienced heavyweights looking for that agile, high speed fun.

What board size is right for you?

One question on every new winger’s mind is how many liters do I need in my wing board? Will it float me? Can I get away with a smaller size? Can I get one board to learn on that is small enough that I will never want to upgrade? The below chart provides a general framework for sizing your board based on weight and experience.

What Size Wing Foil Board is Right For You?

Which wing size is right for you?

As a general rule, a rider under 150 pounds should start with a wing around 4 square meters. For riders over that weight, a 5 meter wing will be a better place to start. This is very much an average - if you're riding in lighter winds or want more power, you'll want to go with a larger wing. If you're a light weight rider or winging in high winds, you'll want to go with something smaller.

If this is your second wing and you are looking for consistent, high performance across the whole wind range, it's smart to separate your wings by 1M increments for most models. That will ensure you are going to have a wing that is properly powered no matter what the wind is reading.

Perhaps you are looking to make each wing maximize its wind range, then a 2m gap works well until you get below 4m. At that point, you'll want to go to 1m gaps due to the exponential power of wind at higher speeds. Using this method, you'll have times where you are overpowered or underpowered at times depending on the range of wind and the sail you chose but it will help you maximize your range using fewer wings.

Starboard Wingboard Lite Tech

What Starboard has to say about the Wingboard Lite Tech

The new Wingboard range takes design inspiration from our high-performance SUP foil boards and Olympic class Windsurf foil boards – combining the speed and efficiency of foiling with the power of the wind. The aim of the Wingboard Foil is to give you maximum performance in a small size while catering to your level, from beginner to expert.

Features:

  • RECESSED DECK - Significantly improves stability as you have a lower centre of gravity. It also brings you closer to the foil for more control when up and riding.
  • BOXY RAILS - Pack the volume where you need it, increasing the float and stability so you can ride a narrower and shorter board.
  • ROUND NOSE - Makes it incredibly forgiving on touchdowns as the nose bounces and skims off the large surface area, not sticking and slowing you down.
  • DRAINAGE CHANNELS - At the tail of the board lets the water drain out immediately once foiling.
  • HIGH VOLUME TAIL - Boosts the overall float to ride such small boards.
  • FLAT TAIL ROCKER - And sharp rails forward increase ground speed until take off.
  • CHANNEL BOTTOM - That get deeper towards the tail helps to pump, rock the board into release and also helps for stability.
  • CUTAWAY TAIL - Allows the board to release that much earlier and reduces the rails from catching through turning.
  • New FOOTSTRAP INSERTS - The new 18cm distance between the inserts allows you to have a wider footstrap span for better trim and control while foiling since you can micro-adjust your position.

2023 North Nova V3

The 2023 Nova has a structurally balanced freeride shape for enhanced aerodynamic performance. Engineered for stability in gusty winds, the new Nova has a progressive swept outline and refined profile section, making it easier to handle and more stable when riding. Your front and back arm pressure is even, not backhand-heavy. The wing creates lift so that you can glide through turns effortlessly without any tail drop. Precise yet compliant. The wingtip geometry and balanced dihedral also prevent oscillation side-toside when gripping the front handle, riding downwind swell, surfing, or simply walking towards the water. With a sweet spot so generous, it makes hard things easy. The new draft-forward curvature in the profile section generates more lift in the front of the wing. This makes transitions smoother and, when combined with improved canopy tensioning, boosts Nova’s low-end power. So much so you can drop down a size. The stiffer, more responsive airframe and tighter skin tensioning mean the canopy stays clean through a wider wind range. We’ve minimised flutter and created a clean trailing edge release with reduced drag. To ensure the wing remains stable and comfortable in overpowered conditions, we've tapered the leading-edge diameter, concentrating the stiffness in the LE centre and allowing the reflexed wingtips to dump excess power. Master of the upwind, glide through tacks, float through gybes, and lofty jumps with bonus hangtime. Whatever goal you’re chasing, the Nova will send you there faster.

Features:

  • Stable balanced geometry
  • Maximum low-end power for instant up & go
