Fly Strap V1 Review w/ Jake M

Today we have the 2023 Slingshot Fly Straps. It's something we haven't seen from Slingshot before. These are a pretty novel footstrap, and they're certainly not going to be for everybody.

Firm Footpad

At first look they're going to appear very simple, and that's actually the design thought behind this. Slingshot set out to make an incredibly lightweight, direct-feeling footpad, so they cut away everything that they didn't feel needed to be there so you could have the truest ride experience on your board. When you pick them up, they're very firm; there's not much comfort here. This is meant for somebody who doesn't necessarily want to go the direction of boots with that direct connection, but they still want their board to have all the liveliness that it possibly could. There's going to be no delay when you push against this; no springiness in the footpad.

Lightweight

Because they're so minimal, they're also really light. We took them to the scale and, against the Dually straps, they are lighter. To be fair, we then took the Brunotti straps, and the Brunotti straps are actually a hair lighter than these. With that said, the Brunotti straps are a soft strap versus these, which are very stiff, so there's going to be a big performance difference there. If you really want the lightest strap on the market, you should look at the Airush Ether straps. Those bad boys actually have an adhesive plate that sticks down, so they are going to be light, but then light is only one portion of this equation. The other is performance, and this combines those two and delivers a really unique feel.

Single Strap System

It's a very simple strap system. This is a single strap. I actually like single straps; I think I've talked about that in previous videos. Riding here in Michigan, we spend quite a bit of time in booties, and I think single straps do a great job of accommodating booties. Riding booties with this strap kind of defeats the entire purpose because you're trying to get a very reactive board, and booties will, to a certain extent, dampen that sensation. But again, single straps are nice and they do a good job of locking your foot down. The band inside the strap really helps keep its shape. It has a good adjustment range with a really long top strap. The attachment is simple; you just put the strap over the top of the base plate, put in the grommets, and you're good to go.

Who Are the Fly Straps For?

Would I personally ride these footstraps? Not in a million years. These straps are for somebody who sleeps without a pillow. That's not me; I want a really cush footbed. It's just something I look for; something that feels nice on my feet. I've talked about the Duotone Entity straps and I also like the Cabrinha Source... anything that's kind of squishy and comfortable, like a baggy coat. This is like a performance leather motorcycle jacket that's just on the cusp of being too small. It's really meant to be as efficient as possible, but when you go that direction you tend to give up a lot of creature comforts. If you rip super hard and you want something that's lively, that's reactive, that's light, and you're all about the performance, these are the ticket for you. All of that comes at a pretty minimal price of $230. For what you're getting, that might seem kind of steep, but there's not anything else quite like this on the market. Again, this is a very niche strap, but it just might be for you.
