Watching This Week | Kai Lenny on Pinch My Salt
If you've never stumbled into Sterling Spencer's "Pinch My Salt" podcast, this episode is the perfect entry point. Sterling and his cousin Ryan somehow convinced Kai Lenny (eight-time world champ, Jaws regular, and the guy most responsible for putting half the ocean on foils) to hop on for an hour, and what followed was one of the most genuinely entertaining wind and water sports conversations we've seen in a while.
They cover a lot of ground. Kai talks about growing up as an outcast windsurfer on Maui getting rocks thrown at him by surfers at Hookipa. He breaks down how foiling started for him around 2016, not chasing the biggest waves like Laird, but asking the opposite question: what's the smallest wave we can ride?
He walks through the brain injury healing journey after years of big wave compounding hits, which is surprisingly candid for a guy who eats Taco Bell burritos at Jaws and calls it elite fueling. Spoiler: he broke a race record on bean burritos and water, no supplements required.
The episode has this easy back-and-forth energy that makes it feel less like an interview and more like a few core friends just riffing. Sterling's whole bit about Laird almost throwing down with Kai over some harbor drama is worth the watch alone.
Whether you're into big wave surfing, foiling, or just good storytelling from people who've spent their lives in the water, give this one a watch.
