The 2019 Cabrinha Moto - Sessions W/Rygo Vlog 04

The 2019 Cabrinha Moto - Sessions W/Rygo Vlog 04

If you've followed our chanel for a while, you know that I also do a series called Versus. For the last year, I've really put in the work testing gear and focusing on creating the most detailed object kiteboarding reviews on youtube.

This takes quite a bit of time and energy to get these right, all that said, with every review it gets easier. When testing the Moto, I realized that all the hard work was worth it. While riding the kite, my mind was racing with the applications and potential trade-offs of this kite. For this meeting, we were able to get a couple sessions in on the Moto as well as chat with the team that created it.

Like I promised in the video log, I'm going to include those Versus videos into this blog. Comparing kites is one of the best ways to size up if the kite is right for you. So give these a watch and you should have a good idea of where the Moto Stacks up.

Moto Vs FX

Moto vs Switchblade

If you don't care to watch the videos, the long and short of it is that people have been asking for lighter, faster and more playful kites. Cabrinha had a solid line up with their all around kite, the Switchblade, their surf kite the Drifter, and their freestyle kite the FX.

The last two years, advanced riders have flocked to the FX and the Drifter in droves. The problem is those are performance kites aimed at a specific style of riding. While they work for experienced riders not everyone wants to ride a niche kite. At the same time, Cabrinha simply can not change the Switchblade without getting massive pushback. The fact is the Switchblade sets the standard when it comes to all around kites. Their solution, create an alternative modern all around kite. Enter the Moto.

Having spoken to many of you on the phones the last couple years, my gut says the Moto is going to be a very popular kite in 2019.  We'll be testing this kite through out the year as well in varying conditions so stay tuned for more feedback on this kite as the year progresses.

2019 Gear picks

For this episode, I was able to link up with some of the Cabrinha team to talk gear as well. We caught up with Lucas a younger new member of the team and Dave, one of Cabrinha long standing members who played a pivotal role in designing some of our favorite kites.

Lucas Arsenault

Being a competitive rider in the kite park league and a Cabrinha team rider, Lucas choses the gear that most fits his style of riding. Predominantly unhooked and high level. If you're looking to take your freestyle to the next level his quiver should give you an idea of what the right gear is.

Kites, I mostly ride the  FX’s in sizes 14, 12, 10 and 9. I feel like this is a very solid spread for myself (175lbs). All of them are tuned to the more slack leading edge setting along with the B turning speed. Overall, this is were the kite ride seems to react the best for freestyle. Occasionally, I also ride the 15m Contra. I bring it along to lighter wind destinations. That kite is a machine and makes me feel like I’m riding at the cable park. Super easy and predictable.

Boards, I only ride the 142 CBL. This board truly does it all for me. It’s a great board for freestyle and riding the park. A lot of people view this board as a park board but honestly as a freestyler it does it all. The thing I love about it the most is it’s predictable landing. The rocker really makes it easy to land blind or wrapped powered and ride out smoothly. I highly recommended it.

A newer face on the scene, Lucas is a rider who isn't afraid to put in the work.

You can learn more about Lucas here: Rider Profile

The FX is hands down one of our favorite freestyle kites. Everything you want from a C - kite nothing you don't.

The CBL is a great choice if you need a board for the cable park as well!

David Hastilow

Dave has been working behind the scenes on cabrinha R&D team. He played a large role in developing some of our favorite kites like the FX and the Drifter. Recently he's taken a larger role with in the company. All that said, if you're curious what gear the man behind the scenes chooses to ride here are Dave's choice gear picks in 2019.

Living in Maui waves are high on the radar, and the Drifter was Dave's top choice until this year. After testing the new Moto this year, Dave felt it was the right kite to meet his needs. He rides the 7 and the 9 and pairing this with a foil board he's able to ride year round on just these two kites.

While it's not as surf specific as the Drifter, the Moto is a modern three strut all around kite. If you're a rider looking to do a little bit of everything but you want something more modern than the Switchblade, the Moto is that kite.

For his boards, Dave like to ride the  Double Agent and when he's riding Strapless freestyle the Cutlass is his board of choice and for the waves he choses the Cabrinha Crossbreed.

So that's a wrap guys.

This year, we'll be dropping more of these Sessions videos to give you an inside look behind the scenes here at MACkite. Next episode, Blake Olsen and I will be doing a little road trip to produce more episodes of Ride with Blake, film for a new series we're working as well as getting shots of Michigan for a local episode of Destinations.  See you on the water.

Just a dude from a kite shop testing all the gear one session at a time.

Many people dream of quitting their job, traveling the world and pursuing their passions. Rygo is one of those people who pulled the trigger. About eight years into a postal career, he decided to change everything and travel as a freelance videographer & writer. This took him from coast to coast and a variety of countries. Nowadays you can catch him on the phones, doing lessons, or working on videos. Of course, he still makes a point to travel as often as possible. His mission is to help people and share the stoke with his customers and students alike. Get out there and kiteboard.
