Prepping Your Waydoo eFoil After Winter Storage

After a long winter, your eFoil might have sat untouched for a few months. Before you rush to the water on that first warm day, it's worth taking the time to go through a proper preseason check. We've done this routine every spring and it saves headaches when the wind is light and the water finally opens up.

Eli walks through exactly how we prep our boards so they're clean, reliable, and ready to ride.

First Thing: Take It Out of Storage

If you think you'll be riding in the next couple of weeks, grab our eFoil out of storage sooner rather than later.

Cold storage can create small issues over time. Moisture, residue, or worn seals can go unnoticed until you're at the launch. Giving yourself gives you a little runway means you can fix anything before it costs you a session.

We like to fully disassemble everything right away so we can inspect each component individually.

Disassemble & Inspect Components

Once you have everything separated, check each component for:

  • Sand or debris — especially at connection points
  • Corrosion or residue
  • Worn seals or gaskets

Even if everything looks fine at first glance, it's worth cleaning it anyway. A clean system is a reliable system!

Clean Electrical Connections

Your connection points are the most critical part of your setup. If these aren’t clean, you can run into power issues, inconsistent performance, or connection faults.

What we do:

  • Use a Q-tip or soft cloth
  • Lightly apply rubbing alcohol
  • Gently clean inside connection ports

You'll want to focus primarily on battery termainals, mast connections, and propulsion unit contacts. You're looking to remove grease buildup, sand, and any residue from last season.

Be thorough and take your time. This is one of the highest value steps in the whole process!

Don't Skip the Propulsion Unit

Even if it looks clean, fine sand or salt residue can sit in places you don't immediately see. A quick wipe and inspection goes a long way toward prevening issues under load.

We treat every connection the same — clean, dry, and ready to seal.

Reassemble with Fresh Grease

Once everything is clean, it's time to put it back together.

Before you reconnect anything, apply grease to all rubber gaskets and seals. This prevents water intrusion, protects seals from heat and wear, and helps connections seat properly.

Apply a thin, even layer. You're not trying to pack it on, just eliminate any dry spots. Pay close attention to propulsion unit seals and battery connection seals.

If you ride frequently, plan to reapply grease to battery connections every few sessions since that connection gets the most water.

Torque and Double Check Assembly

As you reassemble, make sure everything is seated properly, tightened to spec, and aligned. Loose connections or uneven seals can lead to water ingress or vibration issues once you're up on foil.

Power It On & Test

You're so close but not at the finish line yet! Once you fully assemble the board, connect your remote and run the system on land (or in a safe test environment).

Check for a smooth startup, consistent throttle responses, and no error messages. We suggest you run through a range of power levels, and we typically cycle through mid to high power settings to make sure everything responds correctly.

Update Firmware if Needed

Before your first ride, confirm you system is up to date. Firmware updates can improve performance, fix known bugs, and enhance battery management. If something feels off during testing, updating is often the first fix.

Guaranteeing Success On The Water

The biggest takeaway is simple: don't wait until your first ride to find problems.

We’ve seen it too many times. Someone shows up on that first glassy spring day, hits the power button, and nothing works the way it should. Most of the time, it comes down to dirty connections or skipped prep.

Spend an hour in the garage now, and your first session back feels exactly how it should. Smooth, quiet, and fully dialed.
