Low Backroll Kiteloop Nose Grab - Easy Freeride Kitesurf Tricks
Whats up guys, this week, I’m going to cover a fun and easier kiteloop based trick.
With hooked in kiteboarding there’s three things that take a trick to the next level, a loop, a rotation and a grab. Moving past down all the download variations, the Bankroll Nose grab kite loop is probably the easiest powered loop trick. Its a little intense but one you can start underpowered and work your way up! Let’s get to it.
Get simple Backroll kiteloops dialed first
Before attempting this I want to mention do not attempt to learn this one powered up. Start in light wind. As you progress, this is a semi powered move. It’s not a big air kite loop or one that you have to catch yourself if you do it in the right conditions.
Don’t attempt this while powered up. It’s better in light to moderate winds or when you are a little underpowered. The loop is going to bring a ton of force and because you are doing a low roll, you won’t have to catch yourself.
Get small to grab the nose
As you get better, you can do this is more moderate to powered winds but it can be hard on the body and heavy on the knees. Consequences get high in strong winds. Id encourage you to practice this one 100s of times in light wind so you have the muscle memory and confidence if you do want to take it powered.
Come in with the kite at 45. Place your back hand as far back as possible on the bar. Now send a bankroll like normal.Pop off the water and look over your front shoulder and swing your hips into the roll. As you come into the roll, take your front hand off and reach for your nose. Bring your legs in and get as small as possible by sucking them into your chest.
The Grab keeps you safe!
By default, your back hand will bring the kite around into a loop. Staying small and making the grab will help keep you in control as the kite loops and pulls you forward. As you complete the roll, spot your landing and sheet out.The kite will come though and stop around 45 degrees so you can keep riding.
There’s a couple ways to modify this or soften it up too. If the wind picks or or you have more power than intended, you can pull the loop later. This is going to take all the guts out of it and it will feel more like a download. If you are coming in hot, the key is to land directly downwind and go with the speed of the kite. You can soften the landing up by sheeting out and sending the kite higher after it completes the loop.
The key to understanding these concepts and building control is starting small. Something I’ve been pushing for a while is working on loop based tricks in very light wind. With high winds loops having such dire consequences its difficult to practice frequently and progress without really bad spills. Starting small saves you a lot of pain and we all get lots of light wind days where jumping is difficult.
