Cabrinha Moto Apex First Impressions

The Brazilian Brothers are back in Brazil with MACkiteboarding, and the Brazil season keeps on delivering. They're testing the brand new Moto Apex by Cabrinha, a kite that's generated a lot of excitement online. They're ready to pump it up and give the inside scoop on how this kite feels in beautiful Brazilian conditions.

New Materials and Design

The Moto Apex is a very special kite. While it features the Apex material on the leading edge, Cabrinha has introduced Aluula on the struts. This specific combination — Aluula only on the side struts — is a design choice that hasn't been seen before.

Insights from Designer Pat Goodman

Legendary Cabrinha designer Pat Goodman explains that this kite is now super high performance. They've implemented many changes from previous models, resulting in a much higher aspect ratio and a smaller leading edge. The use of Aluula in the outer struts provides stiffness and prevents them from buckling under compression. Pat highlights that the kite has amazing vertical lift, taking the Moto to another level.

First Impressions in the Sky

Once the Moto Apex is in the sky, it's immediately clear that it's a stable kite. Even when the wind is gusty, the kite just sits there. You can fly with one hand on the bar and have full confidence that it isn't going anywhere. The bar pressure is moderate: not light, but not overly heavy either. It feels similar in weight to the new Switchblade Design Works. It's a rapid kite with good feedback on the bar.

Performance on the Water

The Moto Apex is a massive improvement over the older generation of the Moto. On the water, the kite delivers an awesome catch. Even though it's only a 3-strut kite, it has gained a lot of vertical lift, letting you go big on jumps. The loops are easy, and the light steering pressure allows for looping with one hand on the bar.

The kite is easy to use, easy to go up, and easy to kiteloop. While the downloops coming down are a little more technical than those on the Switchblade, this kite is a jumping monster for a 3-strut design. The Brazilian Brothers are stoked on the performance and look forward to comparing it further to the Switchblade and other kites on the market in a full-length review.
