Why the Waydoo Firebox Adds Peace of Mind

Eli walks us through the Waydoo Firebox. The Firebox isn't a necessity, but it's something you can use to have some peace of mind. It's designed for a lithium-ion battery, so it's good to have something on hand if you feel you need it.

What Is the Waydoo Firebox?

The Firebox hits all the boxes because it's a big stainless steel or aluminum box with two latches on the front. It comes with two water bags that you fill with water. To use it, you fill one bag up and place it in the bottom, place your battery on top of that, fill the second bag up, place it on top of the battery, and latch the box shut.

How the System Works

The whole idea is that you should never spray a lithium-ion fire with water, and you should never just let it burn out — those cells will pop and go all over the place. To put out a lithium-ion fire, you either fully submerge it and let it sit, or you completely cover it with sand and smother the fire.

Since you don't want your battery getting all sandy and dirty, the next best option is completely submerging it with water. Waydoo was pretty clever with this: they put a bag system together with enough water volume that if anything happens to the battery, it melts through the bag, drops into the water, and then melts through the top bag to be completely submerged, extinguishing the fire.
