Wake Foiling | Pick 5 Challenge with Cole

Wake Foiling | Pick 5 Challenge with Cole

The "Pick 5 Challenge" is a series that acknowledges the reality that most of us are on a budget when it comes to gear. Today Cole from MACkite accepts the challenge and chooses the 5 pieces of gear he would use to maximize his fun all summer if that's all he could ride.

Boat

The first piece of gear that I'd pick up would be a boat. Now, I don't care if this boat is a wakeboard boat that costs a couple hundred thousand dollars or a fishing boat. As long as this boat has a rope and can get me up and out of the water, I'm gonna be plenty happy with it.

Foil

Now that we have a power source, the second piece of gear that I'd get would be my foil. I've been riding a GoFoil all summer and I've loved it. It's a super light setup, and GoFoil has so many different wing options. Assuming my foil is one piece of gear, I would go with the 32.5 inch mast and the 14.5 short stabilizer because it's super playful, but it's got enough surface area for me to pump with it. I would choose the RS850-HA front wing because it carves really well. It has steps on the wings so it can get up and out of the water for wing-outs, and it's got a high aspect design so you can still pump it even though it only has 850 square centimeters.

Board

Now I'm going to need a board. I'm going to go with Freedom Foil Boards on their 3'6" Whip board with 14.5 liters of volume. This board has a great design. It's got just enough volume and just enough length so that when you touch down on the water, you're not going to sink down into the water. You're going to kick back up and you can keep riding. This is a super forgiving board when pumping, so that's why I would choose that one. Oh, and as a little bonus, that board has inserts so I can put straps on it, which brings me to my next piece of gear.

Footstraps

I have my boat, I have my foil, I have my board... next I would get a set of straps for that board. Because the Whip has inserts, I can put straps on it and go behind the boat. The 850 has enough surface area that I can surf the wake behind the boat. I can pump around, and that front wing is just small enough that I can do airs on it, so I definitely want to put straps onto that board. That's going to help me get up into the air.

2nd Front Wing

Now I have my boat, the foil, the board, and straps. One piece of gear left. I'm going to have to go with another front wing, the RS1300 front wing by GoFoil. This wing is going to make dockstarting a lot more forgiving. The only thing I'm missing with the other setup is that I can't dockstart that front wing very well. An 850 is a little bit small, so I definitely want to go with something bigger if I want to dockstart.

So my five pieces of gear would be a boat (again, it doesn't matter as long as it can get me up out of the water), my GoFoil 32 inch mast, 14.5 stabilizer and RS850-HA front wing, and the Freedom Foil Boards Whip because it has inserts on it, a good length for pumping, and it's still got enough volume where it's forgiving when you do touch down the water. A fourth item would be straps so I can do airs on the board, and then my fifth and final piece of gear is the RS1300 front wing so I can go pump in the flat water off the dock.

Those are the five things that I would bring with me to spend a summer on a lake. This has been Cole from MACkite. Happy shredding, and I look forward to seeing you on the water.
