Top Picks from the MACkite Crew for Staying Safe at the Beach
O'Neill - Don't Get Burned
Summer is a great time to go out to the beach and to catch a few rays. Living only 5 minutes away from the beach, it's pretty easy for us to head out whenever we can. That being said, while we love being out in the sun we also know the dangers of being out in the sun for too long: heat exhaustion, sunburn, skin cancer...it can be hard to handle. That's why we always carry around at least some water, sun screen, or a light rashguard (O'Neill Superlite Jacket) like the to keep us cool and sunburn-free.
Here are the shop's top choices for staying cool and protected out in the water and on the beach:
Angela, Beach Aficionado
I love going to the beach! Lake Michigan is great this time of year for fun, sun, and sandy feet. If I'm at the City Beach, State Park, or on a lake, bayou, or river, I always carry around the Sun Bum Pro with SPF 50. This line was designed specifically by beach-goers who were looking to reduce the risk of skin cancer (which is awesome). It's small enough where I can put the bottle in any of my beach bags, and I use it almost every time I'm out in a swim suit.
Nathan, Bro Brah Pro
Your skin isn't the only thing that gets bombarded by the sun. Your ever-important and delicate retinas (specifically, the macula) are susceptible to sun damage, and we like to protect them with Aqua Azul Water Shades. They're comfortable and are securely strapped on, while shielding your eyes from the sun and water spray - they also give you a wicked tan line! "Where did you get that groovy tan line?", your friends will inquire. You're now able to boastfully reply, "Tans like this don't come easy. I got it while out on the high seas, kiteboarding." Now, you can take your friends' girl by the hand and explain kiteboarding to her. Reiterate the fact that it's a big deal. Don't be shy. You're welcome. Extend our apologies to your friend. Then, tell him about our kiteboarding lessons.
Jake M, Beach Bum
I always make sure to have a face stick or zinc oxide in tow when hitting the beach. With a nose that burns extremely easily, a face stick allows me to apply a good, thick layer of SPF without getting gunk all over my hands. It also doesn't wash off like traditional sunscreen, giving me prolonged protection on the water.
So, when you're out on the water, take some of our advice to heart. If you're still unsure about what to wear, apply, or purchase, please let us know.
