Joe's Moses 590, 683, 695 comparison experience

Joe's Moses 590, 683, 695 comparison experience

Joe is a longtime customer of ours from San Francisco and a Moses foiling fanatic.  I think he actually owns nearly every wing in their lineup.  We love talking shop with one another so he is going to guest host a few blogs since I'm too busy at the moment.  I think you will all enjoy his infectious stoke and sometime's brutal honesty.

Warning: this is more of a personal expose rather than an equipment review...

I take back everything I've reviewed about Moses foils!

Background: This is the start of my second full season of kiting, after one full and one half season. Last year, like so many others, I got hooked on the Moses 633 and loved it to no end. I struggled with the Moses 590 and 683 and I dabbled with the 790 and 873... I weigh 165# and typically ride a 91cm mast on a slingshot dwarf craft micro...

Last Thursday I rode my new Moses 695 for the first time and immediately fell in love with that wing, thinking it was the best wing I've ridden yet (see Moses 695 review). After that review I got a few questions regarding how it compared to the 590, 683, and 633. So the next day, Friday, being windy, I thought I'd do a back to back test of all wings, all on the 330 stabilizer...

I started lit on my Wainman 7m kite w/25m lines on the Moses 695, and like my previous review, it was glorious. I had smiles ear to ear just loving this wing. To be fair, after 45 minutes I went in and grabbed the Moses 590 to try it back to back. Unbelievable! Seriously! When I jumped on the 590 it was a dream come true! It was 20% faster than the 695, 20% more intuitive, and 20% easier to ride. I didn't fight it as much as the 695 in the carves, there was less pressure on my quads and it was just easier to ride, and way more fun. I couldn't believe it! I had my new favorite wing!

But what we even more amazing to me was that I kited another hour with dry hair. In previous sessions, all last season, I fell at least 20 times a session on that wing and I really struggled with dropping off foil. But now, for some reason, that wasn't happening anymore. Had I improved? What was equally enjoyable was the fact that I was able to slow down enough not to outrun the swell. Rather, I could ride the style I enjoy, which is pretend surfing on the swell (I grew up surfing) and carve as hard as I wanted, and the wing stuck to my program and didn't give me any flack whatsoever. I loved the wing so much I couldn't bring myself to go in and swap to the third wing in the back to back test, I just couldn't!

The next day, Saturday, the wind was lighter so put on the Moses 683/450. I never really liked the 683 because last year I constantly got cavitation when carving. Ok, now you are gonna just think I'm full of crap - but Saturday, lightly powered on my 7m, same board, big swell - dream session! I'm not lying! I swear, the 683 session Saturday was the best foiling session I've ever had!!! The 683 would let me carve as hard as I possibly could, and never once did it cavitate or let go. This is what I've always wanted in foiling - to be able to carve rail to rail with all my might. To throw spray off the top of waves is something I dreamt about, and could never achieve, but now I've learned that rather than sending up a huge rooster I enjoy more tracking with the foil and accelerating. I'm telling ya, it was my most favorite session ever! Ever! The Moses 683 was now my favorite wing, and it was another dry hair session.

Sunday, still overjoyed and blissful, I grabbed my same setup - the 683/450/91cm mast and headed out again. It was another epic session, but to be fair I was pretty tired, the wind was slightly less epic, my legs were scorched, and I pushed carving too hard which led to a couple of bad crashes, and a lot more little crashes. But I was riding my new favorite wing and I was super stoked.

So, basically, the 2 wings I had poo pooed somewhat from last year, the 590 and 683, and the new 695, are all my favorite wings at the moment. I think the main take away as that as we progress in foiling equipment that we may have thought wasn't up to par actually was, and it was us who needed some improvement!

I take back everything I said about those Moses wings!
