Brazilian Brothers Review the Harlem Lead Bar

The Harlem Lead has become one of the Brazilian Brothers' favorite kiteboarding control bars, and for good reason. Not only does it have an auto-untwist system, but it works flawlessly, and they'd have a hard time going back to a bar without it. But there are a couple little things that aren't quite perfect, too. So is this still a bar they'd recommend?

Auto-Untwist System

The standout feature of the Harlem Lead bar is its auto-untwist system and, even after a couple months of hard use, it's still going strong. If you loop your kite, this feature alone will level up your sessions.

A kiteboarder lets the control bar auto-untwist.

Lines

Another impressive feature is the SK99+ lines, among the best in the industry. It's often very windy where they ride in Prea, so lines you can trust are essential, especially for big air. A unique feature of the Lead bar's lines is that the line diameter is increased around the Y-splitter. It's still a good idea to move the splitter a bit every ten sessions or so, but the thicker section of line is going to be able to endure a lot more friction from the splitter over time.

The Harlem Lead's lines are a bit thicker near the splitter.

Chicken Loop

If you don't unhook, the stock chicken loop will be perfect for you. It's small, which decreases the distance to your depower throw and makes it much less likely to come unhooked during a wipeout. The quick release is also small so it doesn't accidentally get triggered, but when you do need it, it's still easy to find and its seat belt click-in system is easy to re-engage.

The chicken loop is smaller than many.

Grip

The bar's grip is solid, durable, and grippy, but perhaps a bit stiff to be truly comfortable. Adding to this is the bulky stainless steel piece in the center of the bar. If you like to ride with your hands close to the depower line, this part is wide enough that you'll be holding onto it, and it'll feel a bit strange until you get used to it. It'll also be a bit chilly if you ride in colder water and don't have gloves on.

The Lead bar has a wide steel section in the middle.

Should I Get the Harlem Lead Bar?

If you ride a high-Y kite, then the Brothers would highly recommend the Harlem Lead. The bar's grip wasn't enough to detract from the auto-untwist system, strong lines, and safe and intuitive quick release. This is hands-down one of their favorite bars on the market right now.

Rubens gives a thumbs-up for the Harlem Lead bar.
