Foil Drive FAQs

Foil assist systems are available for free shipping for orders over $99 within the lower 48 in the United States. Your items may arrive in multiple boxes, so be sure to check the contents of each box.

Foil Drive can be added to nearly any foil setup, but it reigns supreme for prone foiling. If you need assistance from wave to wave, riding with a wing, the Foil Drive gives you the extra push. Of course, you can use the Foil Drive for anything from winging to SUP foiling.

There's a lot of options out there. The Gen 2 Foil Drive sees four battery options. So, what's the difference? In short:

  • Power Battery: 5.8 lbs., 45-minute run time, and longer "A" nose cone. It's often picked up as a first battery because of its long ride time.
  • Sport Battery: ~4 lbs. and 30-minute run time. A good option if your riding spot is close to shore or you only need a little boost once in awhile.
  • Travel Battery: ~5.8 lbs. Breaks down into three pieces to follow airline regulation. Good for travel, but you might want a larger battery for local riding.
  • High Power (HP) Battery: Heaviest option available (about 100g more). Stores more power for longer sessions or better torque.

While the Foil Drive comes with a standard 2-blade propeller, an optional 3-blade prop upgrade is available. Based on our tested rides, we've found that the 2-blade is louder but has less drag than the 3-blade; however, the 3-blade seems to offer more thrust and is easier to transition the motor in and out of the water compared to the slight pulsing effect of the 2-blade. While the standard option is good, the 3-blade is an excellent choice if you're after a bit more performance.

It can be tricky to learn the nuances of the Foil Drive. Here are some tips to get started:

  • Start in Flat Water: If you practice in flat water, you're able to understand the timing of take offs without worrying about waves. You're able to focus on balance, weight shifts, and throttle control easier.
  • Understand Front Foot Pressure: We've all done the "wheelie" or have done a nose dive. Developing good footwork habits is essential for avoiding missteps.
  • Get to Know the Throttle: It's not easy trying to get on foil. With acknowledgement of the power levels of throttle control, and learning to gradually ease off when you're on foil, you'll find the balance to eventually lift smoothly.
