Hatteras, NC MACkite is pleased to announce openings for our April kiteboarding vacation to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. If you are interested in learning how to kiteboard, just up and riding, or ripping it up, this trip is for you. The Pamilico Sound is a large shallow body of water that separates the mainland from the Outer Banks. With average wind speeds of 15-25 mph and waist deep water, this is a great place to learn. The water is warm, the bottom is shallow, the surface is smooth, and the view is spectacular.

Hatteras, NCSpeaking of spectacular views, the Outer Banks are the #1 tourist destination along the North Carolina Shoreline. The narrow sandbar islands offer breathtaking ocean views, warm water, a relaxed atmosphere, clear skies, and wind.

What to expect.
A great time learning to kiteboard in a fantastic location. We have been making the trip to the Outer Banks for 6 years now and always have a great time. This year we will offer loads of new 2010 Cabrinha, Naish and Liquid Force kites and boards to test ride. Be ready to work hard all day and relax in a beautiful home by the water at night.

Why the Outer Banks?
Ideal learning conditions. Plenty of wind, beautiful scenery, and flat shallow water so you don't need to worry about losing your board.

Why come with MACkite?
Hatteras, NCOur philosophy is simple; we introduce our students to the sport of kiteboarding in the safest manner possible, while also making the student part of the Midwest kiteboarding community. We do this by introducing you to some of the local pioneers of the sport, people who are likely to become some of your best friends, and who are always willing to help you out. Supporting that community is our number one concern, and part of that support is to offer inexpensive kiteboarding trips to premier locations in comfortable housing while providing a relaxed and professional atmosphere to improve your kiteboarding skills. Although this is an individual sport, it is best enjoyed and safest with a group of great people who take care of one another on and off the water. See what one new kiteboarder had to say about his recent trip to Hatteras with us:

"Steve,

I was reflecting the other day about our trip to Hatteras in the spring. In hindsight, that was without a doubt, the best possible way to learn to kiteboard and to get plugged in to the local kiteboarding scene. The 2 day lesson with Matt and a full week of riding in a controlled / supervised environment was priceless. The shallow water definitely shortened the learning curve but the best part was the fantastic group of riders that were there (you included). It was great to meet so many different riders from all over, many of whom I've seen and ridden with throughout the summer. Their generosity in sharing their knowledge and encouragement blew me away. I was able to return home with a good foundation of skills to build upon. I cringe to think where I would still be if I tried to figure it all out by myself. It's not often these days when we can honestly say something far exceeded our expectations....but that is truly how I feel about the Hatteras trip. I had a great time, learned to kiteboard, and formed some wonderful friendships. Thanks for arranging trips like these and for everything you've done for me.

Sincerely,
Jeff DeVries"

Hatteras, NC

How to get there.
Many people from the Midwest drive to the Outer Banks. The trip is about 15 hours from Detroit and 17 hours from Chicago. Otherwise you will want to fly into Norfolk, Virginia. It is about a 3 hour drive from there.

What to bring:

Hatteras, NC 1. Wetsuit and booties. Bring your fullsuit, shorty, booties and thin booties. Fall in the Outer Banks can range from temperatures in the 50's to the 70's. The MACkite shop stocks a variety of wetsuits and booties- stop by or give us a call. If you are new to the sport and do not own equipment, but are taking our lessons, we will be happy to provide you with a wet suit for your time in the Outer Banks.

2. Sunglasses. It's bright and sunny at the Outer Banks. Water only makes it brighter, so find some decent glasses like SeaSpecs with retaining straps to make it easier on your eyes.

3. Sunblock. A good 30+ waterproof sunblock is a must. Apply at least every two hours. We have found that the spray on water proof sunblock works great because it dries slightly tacky- this keeps your bar from getting slippery. It goes without saying that a good hat can further extend your time in the sun by protecting your nose, ears, face, and neck.

4. Water. Keep hydrated. This is salt water we are talking about, and the temps are similar to a hot Michigan summer day. Bring lots of water in your kitebag.

5. Snacks. Don't allow your body to crash; we all need to keep our energy level up and the only way to do that is take regular hydration and food breaks.

6. Other gear. A travel bag will make the flight with your gear easier- and cheaper! With the new "golf bags" available you can save yourself a bundle on airline fees.

What to expect.

Hatteras, NC Lessons. 3 hours a day in the water most of the time. Most of the time that means that we will take breaks, and do a short 20-30 min wrap up at the end of the day. You'll have questions, and we need to answer them when they are fresh in your mind.

Housing. Nice clean living. No smoking inside the buildings, no pets, and take care of your own messes. Basic common sense applies here.

Night life. The Outer Banks has plenty of nice places to eat and drink. But use good judgement and all things in moderation. Don't expect the instructor to go easy on you or delay the lesson just because you had a late night...or if the night never ended.

Gear. We have plenty of gear for you during your lessons. However, we do not have plenty of gear for everyone to borrow after their lessons. While we will make gear available during your stay, there likely will not be enough for everyone to ride at the same time.

No Wind? Learn to Surf. We run down to the local surf shop and rent some boards.

Lessons will be held at the beginning of the week (Sun-Wed.). If there is no wind, lessons will be rescheduled later in the week (Thurs - Fri.)
