Tech Talk: North Sonar Carbon Foil Set With Matt Aiken
Why Choose Carbon?
The Sonar foil system comes in a full carbon version in addition to the full alloy setup. North is one of the few brands that has a full carbon fuselage, not just a carbon mast. Carbon masts are relatively easy to produce, but saving the weight off of the fuselage is actually more important. Think about yourself holding a five-pound weight in close. You can hold it there all day, but you know how heavy it gets if you hold it out. The same thing applies at the end of the mast. Saving that weight at the end of the mast is going to make your whole setup feel substantially lighter and more lively.
What If I Have an Older Mast?
This is a full modular system. North has been making foils for three years now, and a three-year-old alloy mast will fit on a new carbon fuselage, so it's all integrated.
Sonar 1500R Front Wing
The Sonar 1500R is a relatively low aspect swept wing, but it's pretty unique. It's big, but it works for kite foiling, wing foiling, or behind the boat. The "R" denotes that it's a reflex wing, which means that it has a concave on the trailing edge to give the wing pitch stability. You can ride this wing with a very small stabilizer, or even no stabilizer at all.
Benefits of the Sonar Carbon System
The Sonar Carbon system has masts in lots of different lengths, two different fuselage lengths, and tons of front wings. We have high aspect wings in all different sizes as well as some bigger low aspect wings, which are great for learning to wing. It's a system where, once you've bought into it, you definitely won't outgrow it. You can switch back and forth between kiting and winging just by changing your front wing.
