Freestyle Kiteboarding with Chris Bobryk Tigertail
In my opinion, Chris Bobryk is one of the most underrated freestyle riders in the USA. Yes, I'm biased as we've been friends for a long time. That said, the proof is in his riding. A decade ago he was the last real potential candidate from the USA in the PKRA. He's invented several never-been-done-before tricks, known as NBDs, and he's single-handedly pioneered what we like to call "back country park riding". This includes things like grinding logs, beaches, and more or less interacting with the natural environment in fun and creative ways.
Chris always finds a way to expand on or build new tricks from classic moves. Here is a backroll darkslide on the sand. We're working on some fun, fresh tutorials to break down his style and help everyone try something new.
Recently we spent the winter touring Florida together, making content and getting sessions. I missed out on this gem of a day, but here's a fun glimpse into a day in the life of Chris doing his thing.
About five years ago, competitive freestyle became completely unrelatable and bland, in my opinion. A rider doing a roll with a 720 and beyond can be inspiring, but it can also be bland. The best analogy is music. Some guitar players can rip a scale, but it's going to sound boring and soulless, while others take basic concepts like power cords and make epic music. Remember Nirvana?
The same pattern applies to riding. The best riders make tricks their own and bring energy and life. This can be done with the basics or advanced moves. I've always respected Chris's ability to take the mundane and bring some life into it. From grabs, the energy brought into a trick, or a unique take, the difference is clear.
