Traveling With an eFoil
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), "passengers with airline approval, passengers may carry up to two spare larger lithium ion batteries (101-160Wh)."
According to the FAA, batteries must also be protected and must not be damaged or recalled. Here is a downloadable version of the page for easy reference: FAA PackSafe Guidelines for Lithium Ion Batteries
As riders are expressing their want to travel with an eFoil, brands are starting to listen. For example, Foil Drive has the MAX Travel Battery, which lets you carry two components and still be compliant, as the Gen2 batteries are 129Wh combined and ~97Wh individually. We suggest you reach outto your airline to confirm if they approve your battery and its storage requirements.
Common Travel FAQs
What do I need to consider when traveling with kite or wing gear?
First things first, you'll want to invest in a scale, especially if you're bringing multiple options. Airlines may tack on hefty fees depending on their policy, so having a luggage scale is an essential.
Also, consider where you're going. Do you need a wetsuit? What about that lightwind kite that takes up too much space? If you're unsure, try to reach out to the local kite shop!
We also recommend you travel with your gear in a golf-style bag. You'll be able to pack your equipment in a semi-discrete way.
How do I pack my hydrofoil?
Even though it's a little older, this article written by Tucker gives some awesome insight into packing your hydrofoil gear. In short, don't just throw your parts into the bag and have the right sized gear bag!
What else am I missing?
When it comes to packing down kites and wings, we recommend using compression bags. They're lightweight, often available in multiple sets, and are able to maximize your space.
Also keep in mind to pack the following:
- Pump
- Repair kit with tools
- Sunscreen
- First aid kit
- Appropriate waterwear
- Optional: Impact vest
- Optional: Helmet
Finally, if you're worried about the possibility of fees, see if your destination's kite shop offers rentals. You just might save some time, money, and stress!
