E-Foil FAQs
An electric hydrofoil, often called an eFoil, is a powered surf-style board built with precision engineering for durability and performance. The eFoil consists of a surfboard-like deck, a mast, a hydrofoil, a mast-mounted electric motor, and a high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Once the board gains enough speed, the foil lifts the board above the water, reducing drag and creating a smooth, floating sensation. The electric motor drives a propeller or jet to generate forward thrust on the eFoil. Unlike traditional surf or foil boards, an eFoil does not require waves, wind, or towing to ride, and can reach speeds up to 30 mph.
Not exactly. An eFoil uses a hydrofoil wing to lift the board out of the water, which makes it quieter, more efficient, and dramatically smoother in choppy conditions. The eFoil operates quietly, preserving the peace of its natural surroundings and enabling stress reduction for users. It also produces almost no wake, making it suitable for crowded or sensitive areas. If you want the sensation of flying above the water rather than skimming across it, an eFoil is the better choice.
An electric foil board uses a battery-powered motor mounted to a mast beneath the board. As the board gains speed, water flows over the underwater wings, creating lift which elevates the board above the surface and significantly reduces drag. The hydrofoil allows users to glide silently above the water's surface, providing a unique gliding sensation.
The shape of the board and wings influences performance, stability, and ease of learning, making it important to choose the right shape for your skill level and water conditions. Riders control often speed with a handheld wireless remote, allowing for smooth acceleration, cruising, or tight carving turns.
No. That’s one of the biggest advantages of eFoiling! You can ride on flat water, lakes, bays, rivers, or the ocean. eFoil lessons and experiences can also take place on or near a boat, such as a yacht or private boat, making it perfect for those seeking unique water-based adventures. As long as the water is deep enough for the foil, conditions do not need to be “on” for a great session.
Top speeds vary by brand and setup, but most eFoils cruise comfortably between 15 and 25 mph. If you're just starting out, you'll find that you typically ride much slower, focusing on balance and control rather than speed.
Battery life depends on rider weight, speed, foil choice, and water conditions. On average, most eFoils offer 60 to 90 minutes of ride time.
You generally want at least 3 to 4 feet of water to ride safely, and more depth when starting or stopping. Deeper water reduces the chance of striking the bottom with the foil and provides a smoother learning environment. You'll also want to find a spot with no obstacles within a significant distance to your riding.
Most electric hydrofoil boards range from entry-level pricing to premium setups depending on board size, battery capacity, motor design, and foil options. Higher-end models typically offer longer ride time, lighter construction, and more refined ride characteristics. We'd expect you to pay anywhere from $4000-$8000+ depending on the features and setup.
Key factors include board size, foil wing options, battery capacity, weight limits, and support availability. Before you buy, take some time to figure out which customizations and features are most important for your needs and riding style.
Customization options for eFoils include board size, battery size, wing size and shape, propulsion type, and mast length. Customization options are a significant factor in choosing an eFoil brand. You can customize your eFoil setup based on your size, weight, skill, mood, and water conditions, making the process both practical and fun. Each eFoil brand has its pros and cons, and user experiences can vary significantly between them.
We find that beginners typically benefit from larger boards and more lift-oriented wings, while experienced riders may prefer smaller, more agile setups.
