Every kiter has a parking lot change story. The wind was perfect, the session was good, and then comes the moment of truth — stripping out of a wetsuit in a public parking lot with nothing between you and the world but optimism and poor planning. A changing towel is one of those pieces of gear that doesn't feel essential until the first time you actually use one, and after that it never leaves your bag. For kiteboarding, wing foiling, and water sports in general, a good changing towel earns its place in your kit faster than almost anything else you'll buy.
What Makes a Changing Towel Different From a Regular Towel
A changing towel — sometimes called a changing robe, poncho towel, or change mat depending on the style — is purpose-built for the post-session transition in a way that a regular beach towel simply isn't. The core function is coverage: a well-designed changing towel wraps around your waist or drapes over your shoulders and gives you enough room to peel off a wetsuit, change into dry clothes, and maintain a reasonable level of dignity in a crowded parking lot or beach launch. A regular towel held under your arm while you wrestle with a sticky wetsuit ankle seal is a different and significantly less successful experience.
Material matters too. Microfiber changing towels are lightweight, pack down small, and dry faster than traditional terry cloth — which matters when you're rolling a wet towel back into a gear bag at the end of a session. Towelling and fleece-lined styles offer more warmth and comfort, which pays off on cold days when getting out of a wetsuit in the wind is an exercise in speed. Some styles combine both — a quick-dry outer layer with a warmer inner lining — which covers the widest range of conditions in a single piece.
Choosing the Right Style for How You Ride
Changing towels come in a few distinct styles, and the right one depends on how and where you ride. Poncho-style towels pull over your head and hang to mid-thigh or knee length, giving you full coverage and both hands free while you change — the most practical option for most riders and the style that translates best from parking lot to beach to boat ramp. Wrap-style towels secure around your waist and work well in warmer conditions where upper body coverage isn't a priority. Changing robes extend coverage further and double as a warm layer between sessions on cold days, which makes them a genuinely useful piece of kit for shoulder season riding rather than just a post-session convenience.
Size is worth thinking about too. A changing towel that's too small fights you during the wetsuit removal process, which defeats the purpose. Most purpose-built options are sized generously enough to accommodate the contortions involved in peeling off a tight wetsuit, but it's worth checking dimensions if you're between sizes or working with a particularly uncooperative suit.
How a Changing Towel Earns Its Keep
A good changing towel does more than solve the post-session modesty problem. On cold days it keeps you warm between gear checks and water time, which matters when you're rigging on a breezy beach and the wind is doing its best to pull heat away from a body that's already wet. It doubles as a ground cover for gear that shouldn't sit in sand or gravel. It gives you somewhere clean and dry to sit while you sort your equipment after a session. The riders who own one find uses for it that go well beyond the original purchase reason, which is the hallmark of gear that actually belongs in your kit.
For travelers, the compact pack size of a microfiber changing towel makes it a no-brainer addition to any kit. It takes up almost no space, adds almost no weight, and solves a problem that comes up every single trip regardless of where you're riding.
How We Look at Changing Towels
We've been on enough beaches and boat ramps to know that the changing towel is one of those purchases that riders either make early and never regret, or make late after one too many awkward parking lot experiences. The options we carry are ones our team actually uses — practical, durable, and sized for real use.
If you're not sure which style fits how you ride, reach out and we'll point you in the right direction. It's a small addition to your kit that pays off every single session.
