Beanies, Booties & Gloves

Nothing ends a session faster than cold hands and feet. Gear up properly and your only reason for coming in is running out of wind — not running out of warmth.

Cold extremities end sessions faster than almost anything else on the water. You can have the best wetsuit money can buy, but if your hands are numb on the bar or your feet are aching through your board, you're coming in early regardless. Neoprene accessories for kiteboarding and wing foiling — beanies, hoods, booties, and gloves — are the difference between a full session and a short one when the temperature drops. For Great Lakes riders pushing into spring and fall, and the hardy few who ride through winter, getting these pieces right is as important as any other gear decision you'll make.

Beanies and Hoods: Keeping Your Head in the Game

The debate about how much heat escapes through your head has never been fully settled, but anyone who's taken a cold-water wipeout and come up with an ice-cold skull knows the answer feels pretty clear in the moment. Neoprene beanies are the right call for mild to moderate cold — they cover your head without the restrictive feeling of a full hood and work well layered under a helmet. For genuinely cold water, a proper neoprene hood offers coverage and insulation that a beanie can't match on its own.

Thickness matters here just as it does in a wetsuit. A 2mm hood handles cool conditions comfortably, while 3mm and 5mm options are built for serious cold. One trick worth knowing: in the coldest conditions, wearing a neoprene beanie over your hood adds a meaningful layer of insulation without bulk. The beanie compresses the hood against your head, reduces flushing, and keeps the whole system in place through wipeouts. It sounds simple because it is, and it works better than most riders expect the first time they try it.

Booties: What Thickness and Style Actually Mean on the Water

Neoprene booties for kiteboarding and water sports aren't all the same, and the differences matter once you're actually riding in cold conditions. For water temperatures below 50°F, a 5mm bootie is the standard starting point — below that and your feet will let you know quickly. In moderate cold, a 3mm bootie gives you more feel through the board while still keeping you comfortable through a long session.

Toe construction shapes how the bootie fits and performs. Split toe designs divide the boot into two sections — one for your big toe, one for the rest — which improves stability and reduces the foot sliding that makes some booties frustrating to ride in. Round toe designs are warmer and fit more like a conventional shoe, which some riders prefer for comfort over longer sessions. Cut height is the other variable worth thinking about: high cut booties tuck under your wetsuit and seal your ankle against flushing, which is the right move in cold water. Low cut styles offer more flexibility and work well in conditions where you're walking over rocks or reef, functioning more as protective water shoes than thermal insulation.

Gloves and Mitts: Staying in Control When It's Cold

Cold hands on a control bar are a real problem, and neoprene gloves for kiteboarding and wing foiling are designed specifically around that challenge. Thin neoprene gloves and mitts add warmth without sacrificing too much feel on the bar, which works well in mild conditions or as wind protection on warmer days. For spring and fall riding in genuinely cold water, 5mm thickness is the benchmark — anything less and you'll feel the cold working through before the session is over.

Lobster claw mitts have become a go-to for a lot of cold water kiters for a practical reason: they split your fingers into two sections rather than five individual pockets, which retains warmth significantly better than a traditional glove while still allowing enough dexterity to manage the bar, adjust your depower, and handle your safety system. Full mitts are warmer still but sacrifice more fine motor control — a tradeoff worth considering depending on how cold your conditions actually get. If you're not sure where your riding falls on that spectrum, err toward more insulation. You can always take gloves off between sessions; you can't add warmth you didn't bring.

How We Look at Cold Water Accessories

We ride in Michigan, which means we've tested cold water gear in conditions that sort out what actually works from what just looks good on paper. The beanies, booties, and gloves we carry are ones our team reaches for when the water temperature is making a real argument for staying home. Getting these pieces right is what keeps you in the water through the shoulder seasons — and for some of us, well past them.

If you're building out a cold water kit for the first time or replacing gear that's past its best, reach out and we'll help you put together a setup that fits your conditions and your riding style.
