North's New Kite Design
2-STAGE ARC DESIGN
The flattened 2-stage arc design enables a smooth curved efficient central region of the kite to produce power, with straighter wing tips for a more dynamic steering response.
All the kites share the same 2-stage arc design. What’s different between models, is the extremity of the arc width.
AERO-OPTIMIZED CANOPY TECHNOLOGY
We've added an extra panel that connects to the leading edge seam to ensure a precise lateral profile shape is maintained as close to the leading edge as possible, creating a smooth transition from the segmented leading edge to the curved canopy. This results in a more aerodynamic and efficient airflow and less turbulence.
REINFORCED DACRON EXO-SKELETON
A durable frame around the perimeter of the kite made from stretch-resistant Techno Force 160gsm Dacron material. The Exoskeleton helps the transition where the Kevlar reinforced strut system meets the lighter canopy material. It adds durability, strength and elongation control, protecting the canopy and making the kite more responsive in the steering and depower. The result is a durable kite that can hold its profile for increased performance and lift, but is also dynamic, flexible and can twist to turn.
A wide span, flattened arc kite like the Orbit Freeride makes the most use of its area, so it has the best hangtime and the best power delivery for its size. As the arc shape becomes narrower the kite uses less of its area to provide actual power and efficiency. A smaller turning radius kite like the Carve is fast in flight, with less power overall.
Spliced, pre-stretched bridle lines with less parasitic drag for greater aerodynamic performance. Our new manufacturing method to pre-load and measure the bridle lines before cutting improves accuracy and consistency. This combined with quality materials, results in reduced shrinkage, reduced elongation and improved longevity.
HYPERFLOW INFLATION SYSTEM
High volume single point inflation system with larger diameter hose for rapid inflation and deflation. Bayonet style main inflation valve compatible with most pumps. No adapter needed
TECHNO FORCE | D2 RIPSTOP FABRIC BY TEIJIN
Premium high-density canopy material made in Japan, using high tenacity polyester yarn for lightness, high tearing strength and high endurance. Teijin Techno Force has the highest strength to weight ratio and longest durability in the industry
DURALITE SEAM PROTECTION
Lightweight reinforcement to protect from chafing and abrasion along the struts to the leading edge. Thin foam padding is inserted underneath and forms a lightweight durable buffer to lift the kite slightly off rough surfaces, and protect the stitching along the struts and leading edge seams.

Where Craftsmanship Meets Technology
Using modern profile analysis software to put some data behind the engine has enabled us to go deeper into aerodynamic performance and to optimise the shape of the kites for greater efficiency. By testing different profile attack angles as well as different profile alignment to the airflow, we've been able to take a new direction for optimum performance, creating a premier range of kites.
Working with woven and flexible materials is a real challenge in aerodynamics. Nothing ever comes out exactly how you design it on screen - the biggest challenge is getting the actual kite in the sky to be the same as the one you have designed on the computer.
If it was purely aerodynamics then all kite designers would be aeronautical engineers - but this is not the case. There's a lot of handcrafting and understanding about building wings from flexible materials which can only be obtained from years of experience (and thousands of prototypes).
The stability of these materials also makes a great difference in the accuracy of your prototyping. We've tested some materials that are so inconsistent we've found ourselves judging problems in the kite that were not created from the design, but from irregularities in the materials - especially in an inflated structure.
Better quality materials, combined with more automation in the manufacturing process, allows kites and bridles to now be refined within millimeters.
Less parasitic drag. Greater aerodynamic performance.
It's important to have stable bridle material that is accurately assembled from the very get-go. Firstly, you want it to be consistent from kite to kite, and secondly, you want it to change as little as possible over time. We've carefully analysed and tested our bridle lines to find the best combination of stability, strength and durability. Then we've introduced a new way for the factory to pre-load these as they manufacture - before they cut them.
This automation allows us to greatly tighten the tolerance and accuracy, and combined with using the best quality materials, results in a very low change in either shrinkage or elongation and improved longevity. The kite should feel the same for a longer period of time. Since we don't use any pulleys in our bridles, the need for this stable bridle line is even more important.

The more bells and whistles you have, the more there is to go wrong, especially on the water. All of our kites use fixed-cascade bridles with no pulleys. Removing the plastic pulleys from within the load-bearing part of the kite improves the safety and your connection to the kite. The result is less drag, more accuracy and a more direct feeling. Without pulleys, the kite powers more evenly and has improved steering and depower response. This accuracy improves your experience and helps you feel more connected to your gear.
This is not the first kite equipment ever designed. Decades of hands-on experience has gone into improving and refining these kites. We've analysed every detail carefully to ensure all those years of feedback have been addressed and we don't encounter problems we've seen surface in the past.
I personally ride and test every prototype I make, and I'm the biggest critic. Before it leaves my hands, I have to be satisfied with it.
