Tip #20 - Understanding the Cabrinha IDS System

by Brad Knoth, Midwest Team Rider

I have had lots of questions about the Cab IDS system. There seems to be some confusion and I just want to get some info out there:

Cabrinha Powerdrive IDS System 1. It is primarily for self landing your kite.

2. It is to be used at the end of your session and/or when you are in trouble.

3. The functionality of the IDS is primarily in the engineering and design of the bridle on the kite. Kites built prior to 2009 will not have IDS even if you change bar setups. It is also not possible to modify earlier model kites with an IDS bridle.

4. The IDS mechanism/release at the bar just gives a simple and easy one step way to activate the landing of the kite.

5. A ProBar upgrade kit is available which gets the front line attachment points just above depower strap, and it gives you a grab handle at that point. This is ONLY recommended for advanced riders.

6. The system is simple and very reliable. I have tested it over and over again in heavy winds and it has not let me down.

Here is a good video on the system that will make it very clear how the system works.

Cabrinha is now using this system on all 2009 kites, with the new 2010 kites running an internal IDS line.
