Ryan's Review of the Onewheel Plus
Being a huge fan of the electric skateboards I was super eager to give the onewheel a try. The off-road versatility of it was super appealing to me. With other electric skates or even their predecessors, the manually-powered skateboard its always a huge bummer when you have to get off to walk your board around a rough spot or across the grass or even if the sidewalk gets to bumpy. I like to ride where I want, when I want, and the onewheel has had my attention for this reason for awhile.
When I first hopped on the onewheel I was super impressed how easy it was to hop on it and stand stationary. When I was ready, I slowly leaned forward and it started to accelerate at a reasonable pace. My first run with the board was a little shaky. There is definitely some balance that goes into riding the board, unlike most other skateboards. It took me two to three 100ft runs to get totally comfortable with balancing and riding the board in a straight line. Then it took me another 15-20 times after that to get comfortable with turning the board. Once I got used to it I was riding around with ease and loving not thinking about what I was riding over and just cruising wherever I want.
I have yet to hit top speed on it, which I normally do with any e-skate after about the first 10 seconds of hopping on it. So it is not a board meant for the speed demon, but will go up to 15mph if you feel so inclined. Getting off the board can be a little challenging. The key is to stay balanced and lift up your toes or heel until you hear the motor disengage with a single quite click. At this point you are able to bring the nose or tail back to the ground. Overall, it is an awesome skateboard for the person that wants to ride anywhere. If you are only looking to keep it on nicely paved streets there may be a better board out there for you.
