Let's Chat: Travelling with Kiteboarding Golf Bags

Traveling with Kite Gear

Spring break is right around the corner! Hopefully, you have you planned your trip, packed your bags and are ready for some good times on the water.

Quick question—how much are you planning to spend on travelling with your kiteboarding gear?

Although there are creative ways to get around paying extra for your kite gear, It’s always a good idea to consult your airline’s policy on baggage fees beforehand. That way, at least you’re prepared for the worst case scenario if the ticket agent doesn’t give you any leeway.

One of the most widely used methods for transporting your gear via airline is with a kiteboarding “golf bag”. As the name suggests, it is a large travel bag designed to look like golf equipment. Historically, golfers have always been able to check their golf clubs for free. Travelling kiters and surfers picked up on that fact, and bam—the kiteboarding “golf bag” was born.

Even today, the sheer mention of the word “board” will no doubt land you with extra charges at the airport ticketing desk. Try not to use that word—ever. And try not to act, talk or dress like a surfer. They’ll spot you a mile away, dude. I’m not suggesting that you hide your true self—just go “undercover” for a moment. Swap out your surf trucker hat for a Callaway, pop the collars on your polo shirt and chat about hitting the links after dinner. That will help remove any detailed questioning about the actual contents of the “golf bag” that you’re trying to check for free. If you need to, just throw in a couple of real golf clubs, a handful of golf balls and some spikes from the Goodwill. Conscience cleared, amigo!
