Brad, Jeff, and I had a light wind day up at Silver Lake. I had successfully poped my bladder by the time I got all set up. So Brad and I went to go have some fun on some Cabrinha kites. I've always wanted to do this and finally its happened...Check out the video!

That is an amazing video.
I still can't figure out how the kite and rider can glide upwind. |

Thanks for filming Jeff, and a big thanks to Kev for editing and putting on the show! I though it was cool to just have the kite pull me up the hill, and then ride down with the board into the water....and then Kev shows up and rides for 10' on the sand at the peak, sends the kite, and goes into flying mode!!! It makes more sense when you see it in person. You know how if you pendulum under you kite and the kite hindenburgs, and the kite free falls into the wind? It is kinda like that, you are gliding into the wind, but you are descending, so it only works if you have a steep slope. Also, the wind is getting compressed and redirected by the dune which creates an updraft. Basically, you send the kite, and wiggle it at 12 to initiate the glide...WARNING! Kev is a pro and has received training with other gliding machines...no room for error when you are 30' off the ground. If you start to pendulum back and forth, or mishandle the kite the results could be tragic. I got a little glide going testing it out and it did not end well. Kev, correct or add to this if I am off.

Wow thats cool. Kevin have you been hanging out with Chasta?
BK thanks for the commentary about how it works. So basically Kevin is slope soaring with a kite. Something to note. Kevin is the only one flying down the hill, BK is riding down the hill. Kevin has experience flying gliders and paragliders and has been out mountain snowkiting too. - DC -------------------- |

Wow.....pretty cool.
I have always thought about this when snowkiting.....looks like you don't need snow.....it's amazing what a month of sitting in irons will make you do. You boys are crazy....I think I'll stick to the water and snow for now. wow. now can we get some freakin wind so we can all get back to business. -------------------- Eric A.

It's weird when I go to bed to wake up to my brother have posted this video on every kite site he could find.....I feel exploited. Brad you pretty much covered it all. I have been thinking about this and flying more diagonal to the hill may prove to be a more efficent glide, then the kite wouldn't surge quite as much. Also I think trying the "wiggle" at the peak of some big water jumps may result in longer hangtime/possible upwind flying. That's all I have to add, I'm glad you guys like the video!
