2015 Naish Pivot Kiteboarding Kite Review:
by Steve Negen

I started kiteboarding in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Back then there was not a lot of choice when it came to kites, and you can almost forget about safety or the ability to ride upwind. When we received the Naish AR5, boy was that something else. Well Naish has come a long way since then, and I was able to experience it first hand on the new 2015 Pivot.

The new 2015 Fusion Control bar is very well thought-out and easy to set up and use. The safety pin is short and flexible, great for connecting into the harness hook. I rode below the bar depower, which keeps the bar exceptionally clean. I liked the fairly thin diameter of the bar.

The Pivot’s new inflation valve worked great for pumping up. A 12 meter kite with 3 struts and a large intake valve make life easy. There is no question they borrowed the system from Cabrinha, but hey, it’s one of the best on the market.

Self-launching the kite was a bit tricky, although I was behind a pier (4’ high cement wall) and the wind was fluky right by shore. The kite didn’t want to roll over and pop up easy. Once in the air it was a very happy camper.

This kite is truly an 80% of the market type of kite. In other words, if you are not looking for strictly wakestyle / freestyle type riding it works amazing. The range was fantastic, evidenced by the fact I was riding with another rider on a Best TS 17 meter in boots and holding the same line. The wind varied from 12-18mph and I was pleasantly powered most of the time. The bar pressure is right in the middle, not super light but not enough to really work out the arms either. The low end wind range of the kite is fantastic for a 12 meter. I never got super powered up, so I can’t say how it is when overpowered.

The 2 things that really stuck out in my mind during the session were the turning speed and park-it-and-forget-it ability. The kite really does pivot, but not so much that you have to keep a total eye on the kite while turning. Fast, smooth and predictable. The kite has nice lift and float and makes trying new things easy.

Waves – sorry, I didn’t get to go in the waves. The drift did seem solid and turning speed is up to wave kite standards. Maybe next week I can get a review when the northerlies blow through.
All in all I would highly recommend this kite to new riders and riders who are looking to upgrade their quiver. Naish has really built a solid new platform and added lots of great new features in the new inflation system and bar. The 2015 Naish Pivot is definitely go to generate some great buzz.
