The 11th iteration of the Cabrinha Switchblade continues the legacy of one of the world's most popular kites. The 2016 Switchblade has been updated once again to cater to the ever-developing needs of it's raving fans. Enhancements include increased low-end power, with a bit of bridal tuning, while maintaining the traditional Switchblade feel that everyone loves. The five strut platform helps maintain incredible structural integrity throughout the canopy, regardless of wind conditions or trim adjustment. The draft-forward design of the Switchblade that helps the kite accelerate forward and blast upwind is what makes the design so popular to a wide variety of riding preferences. The Switchblade features the "same-old" powerful, predictable feel while maintaining exceptional responsiveness and control. The 2016 Switchblade continues to be dedicated to the kiteboarder looking for a versatile, high performance kite that they can remain completely confident in.
Nathan's Impression on the 2016 Switchblade
It's been nearly 9 months since we first received the 2016 Switchblade and we've been far too excited about just riding with this kite rather than sharing our impressions - our apologies!
There is some good news and bad news for 2016. The good news is, the Switchblade is still a "Switchblade" if that makes sense. It has the same solid, smooth, and easy-to-use feel that it's always had. The bad news is best put this way - you'll be upgrading after you fly one. I'm doing my best to not sound like the standard broken-record retailer encouraging you to "buy the new and ditch your old kite" - not easy, sometimes!
The improvements I noticed included a much, much smoother feel at the bar and a little snappier response. This is due to a few bridal refinements and an adjustment in the wingtip shape. It has the same amount of low-end as the 2015 - well, maybe a touch more.
The Switchblade is one of those kites that can do nearly anything quite well. It may not excel in the waves like the Drifter, or help you land your next trick like the Chaos (or even FX) - it's one of the industry standards for a do-anything kite.
Why upgrade, then? If there are minor improvements, why ditch my 2013 Switchblade for the new 2016? Simply put, kites wear out. It's like getting new brakes for your car or touching up the paint on your house - if you want to keep kiteboarding safely, you should re-up your kites every few years, as they wear out. The lines and canopy stretch and become weak, often times becoming prone to failure. Spend a little on yourself - enjoying your time on the water is worth it!
What Cabrinha has to say about the 2016 Switchblade
The evolution continues in the 11th year of the Switchblade. With enhanced profiles to optimize the low end power production and a bit of fine tuning, the 2016 Switchblade delivers spot on performance its fans have come to expect. The five strut design has distinct segments that hold the canopy true to its intended shape increasing performance no matter the wind conditions or angle of attack. The full draft-forward, rounded entry, aerodynamic profile really set it apart from the competition. The wide range of attack angles give the SB the incredibly powerful, predictable pull it’s famous for while maintaining maximum control and responsiveness. The Switchblade remains true to the spirit of kiteboarding, making it the industry’s first choice for a high performance all around kite.
2016 Cabrinha Control Bar Options
The Cabrinha Overdrive 1X Control System with Recoil sets the standard with your connection to your kite. The adjustable control ends, with a range of 48-56cm on the Standard and 57-65cm on the XL, make for on-demand adjustment for the perfect setting regardless of your kite choice. Redesigned in 2015, the QuickLoop safety release remains one of the simplest and safest release systems on the market. Activation of the 1X's single line flagging system allows the rider to immediately remove power from the kite and safely return you to land. The Recoil trim method allows the rider to quickly access the trim adjustment in the same spot for fast and easy adjustment when you need it.
The Cabrinha Overdrive 1X Control System with TrimLite is effectively the same control bar as the Ovedrive described above, only with a cleat depower system in the place of the Recoil trim handles. The TrimLite Cleat allows the rider to precisely control the trim setting with a quick and easy pull of a line, located within arm's reach. This design, new for 2016, increases the rider dedicated to the Cabrinha brand to utilize a more widely-used method of trimming the kite, rather than their traditional Recoil system.
The Cabrinha 1X with TrimLite Control System, new for 2016, offers a fixed length option for those riders who prefer simplicity. Empolying the Trimlite cleat depower system, this bar is truly free of what some may call superfluous "bells and whistles."
